It's a long time since the passing of Saint William M. Gaines. MAD has a great history of original and upbeat humor in the face of morality legislation, heroic, really. The Frank Jacobs book that came out in the seventies is a pretty good participant's perspective of the small company of staffers and contract writers that used 'picto-fiction' as a way to avoid legal attacks on the basis of the old Comics Code authority. Find the old paperback reprints from the sixties and seventies: not politically correct by any means but bladder-busting fun.
