Day 109 : Waco, Texas : : : roadtrip.beimers.com : : :
Ya know, the day I win some big lottery jackpot, I'm heading on the first plane to LA and doing a road trip all up and down California. Why? Well because I'm rich & I can do whatever the hell I want, that's why! You ask way too many questions.
In any event, I ran across this site which has some road trip stories that these people did on a nationwide roadie. After scouring the CA archives, I was curious what they thought of Texas. Well, as luck would have it, they ran across the same monument I've often worshipped lo these many years: The Dr Pepper Museum in Waco.
The whole site is rather addictive ... much like Diet Dr Pepper. I particularly like the quote at the top left of the page. The Underground Organization of the Day and Creation Evidence Museum are also worth a chuckle.
Additional Note: The Hearst Castle looks particularly worthwhile. I'm a little intrigued by the idea of doing all five tours (about 2 hours each) in one day, though. Might have to plan on spending more time in San Simeon than originally planned.
The Highway One leg of the trip is probably the coolest. I like the puke count they have on this. The Mud Slide of the day is a little less than heartening.

Will check the site, but trip ideas that come to mind would be:
AUSTIN - for any of 45 reasons.
Illinois' SETH PETERSON Cottage - a restored Wright bungalow now available for rental.
NYC - certain things are easily available there and unavailable anywhere else, like a dog at Nathan's Famous. And McSorley's Pub has only one location. I wanna pretzel, too.
BIG BEND / TERLINGUA - but armed in case smugglers shoot at me.
FOUR CORNERS - must see Ford's point in Monument Valley.
THE ENTIRE REMAINING ROUTE 66 - just because.
Interesting stories on the site, some of the areas you mention are covered. They were in Providence on 9/11 and tracked back to NYC to spend about 6-7 days there immediately after. Very interesting reading there.
They cover one spot (that I caught) on Rt66. I wanna say it was in Nowhere, OK ... can't recall off the top of my head. I was hoping for more coverage in the south, but that was one of the areas they skimped a little on.
After the aforementioned fantasy trip thru CA, another plan would be to tour the south ... hence my disappointment. I did once trek from Houston to Memphis, back when the Coogs went to the Liberty Bowl. That was when I got to see my old haunts of Sunflower & Indianola, MS. Very nice trip, but would have liked to have spent more than 24 hours doing the entire journey (and working 10 hours straight upon arriving back in Houston).
