A Smattering of Movie Updates

  • Napoleon Dynamite is mentioned as a July 9th release @ River Oaks now. As much as that sucks, the movie is not to be missed. Just reschedule it from the previously mentioned 6/11 release date ... unless someone has this showing before Landmark does.

  • That infamous 6/11 date still has Garfield, The Stepford Wives, and BAADASSSSS! however.

  • Will Smith in the movie "I Robot" ... WTF???? ... check it out on July 16 if you must. Personally, I think I'd rather check out Halle Barry in Catwoman a week later.

    More immediate releases ...

  • Tromatic Thursday (today): "Mothers Day" - looks great, but I gotta pass as I'm doing the poor white boy shuffle ... and studying for an MBA.
  • Super Size Me (5/14) - still high on my list, exclusively at the Greenway theater.
  • Shrek 2 (5/19) - I gotta admit to loving the first movie in this story, so I'll be there for this one.
  • Caranidru (5/28) - follow me on this one. Here's the pitch via Landmark's email:

This film exposes the life of the now closed São Paulo House of Detention, the then largest penitentiary in Latin America. Observing the prisoners' deplorable state of health in the overcrowded prison, a doctor volunteered his services, gradually earning their respect. His visits with ailing inmates provide the context for sharing lively and touching personal stories. These narratives culminate in the notorious October 1992 Pavillion 9 massacre, in which 111 unarmed inmates died. (Fully subtitled)

So this doctor makes such an indelible impression on the prisoners that they rebel and end up being massacred? Call it the feel good story of the year. Still, I'm game for a foreign film if the story is decent enough. This one looks compelling, so I think I'm there for it.

  • There is, apparently, a Bollywood theater across the highway from the Alamo Drafthouse. Eventually, I need to take in about 3-4 good Bollywood movies just to say I've done so. I'm thinking of splitting it in half between theater and video experience. I need movie recommendations ... serious ones.

Movies I need to catch up on ...

  • The Alamo - as bad as everyone has said it is, I still need to catch it.
  • Bobby Jones - Jesus playing golf ... nice.
  • Connie and Carla - perfect new movie for the Rocky crowd
  • Johnson Family Vacation - looks like great dollar cinema fare
  • You Got Served - still at the dollar cinema joints.

    Special Alert:

  • May 21st ... Traci Lords at Alamo Drafthouse. Presenting some silly movie or another. I intend on taking my VHS of Fast Food for her to sign.
  • May 30th ... Huggy Bear at the same joint. The movie tie-in? " I'm Going To Git You Sucka" Oh well.
  • Alamo is opening a new joint in San Antonio this summer. Hats off to em for that. Still waiting on Houston establishment #2.

    DVD Version ...
5/11 - Fog of War comes out. I may snag that one for the permanent collection.

Not Really A Movie, But ...

  • Hedwig, the live show, opens tomorrow at Fitzgerald's. Tix are $20, the gig is downstairs, the start time looks to be pretty damned early. As much as I was looking forward to opening weekend, I'm going to have to pass and take it in the week after. Again ... poverty and MBA final exams rise to kick my ass once more. Better still, on the 21st, the show gears up to play live at River Oaks for the midnight showing of the movie. That one seems like a definite, also.
